Solomon Islands and Resorts

The Solomon Islands, located in the south Pacific, has witnessed migration from all directions over thousands of years, combining a scattered, comparatively isolated population to produce a country rich in cultural diversity. Melanesians, Polynesians, Asians, Micronesians and the odd Westerner all call the Solomons home, imbuing the islands with a variety of islander traditions unrivalled in the Pacific.

The Solomon Islands is comprised of 1000 islands, grouped into nine beautiful provinces. Each is totally unique and genuine, with simple hospitality taking the place of 5 star resorts.

Solomons Islands Provincial Map

The Solomon Islands has many resorts and hotels offering a wide range of accommodation for visitors to the region. Honiara is the capital, but getting out into the surrounding local islands offers a paradise that only feels “miles” away.

With ancient customs still widely practiced in thousands of small villages, local life is an often-unexpected bonus for visitors. The people place natural beauty ahead of man made attractions. Visitors should be mindful that facilities are limited in some places as travel becomes more distant from Honiara and the provincial main centres and towns.

World-class history, diving, surfing, fishing and snorkelling

The Solomon Islands has some of the best diving, surfing, fishing and snorkelling in the world. Shipwrecks and plane wrecks from World War II can be touched while diving and snorkelling and fishing can be arranged from any resort in the Solomons.

Japanese aggression turned the islands into a theatre of war during World War II. Both the Japanese and Allied Forces suffered huge losses in land, sea and aerial battles. Over 60 years later, the archipelago is littered with war wrecks on land and underwater.

Both the US Memorial, atop Skyline Ridge, bearing a detailed description of the Guadalcanal Campaign and the Japanese Peace Memorial, with its four white monoliths on Mt Austin offer panoramic views of the capital, Iron Bottom Sound and the Florida Islands. There are guided Tours available for other important WW2 landmarks such as Bloody Ridge, Alligator Creek and Red Beach.

Diving/Snorkelling

The Solomons is described by many as the best diving in the world due to its combination of wrecks, fish and coral. There are war relics everywhere in the Solomons, including several renowned war shipwrecks and plane wrecks.

Toa Maru II shipwreck

Some shipwrecks and plane wrecks visible from the surface can be seen while snorkelling, others are in deeper water only for the diver and some, such as the 40 shipwrecks and two plane wrecks in Iron Bottom Sound, are in water too deep for diving.

There is also spectacular wall diving, bombies, thousands of species of fish, sharks, coral, rays and dolphins.

Manta rays

In some places the coral can be seen in broken grey pieces on the ocean floor, a sad tribute to the earth quake of 2007, but in many places it remains untouched by the tremors and flourishes with bursts of colour. There is evidence in some of the quake affected areas of the broken grey coral sprouting new colourful growth, so the places affected are repairing themselves.

Surfing

The western province is a jewel in the Pacific. With long left and right waves breaking over thousands of reefs. The western province could still remain uncrowned with all the surfers from both Bali and the Maldives.

World class, quality waves have been discovered at Gizo, Skull Island and Shark Point. In the south Star Harbour offers a very small number of surfers' perfection due to its exclusivity.

Like one all to yourself?

This could be any one of four right hand reef breaks at Gizo. This day no one way out at any of the breaks! The left just south is called the 'playground'.

Fishing

Big game fishing can be arranged from any resort in the Solomons. But once you are here you might find that the local definition of “going out for a little fish” has a new meaning.

Local fishing trips can be arranged with as little as 30 minutes' notice from any resort in the Solomons. The numbers and size of fish in close proximity to inhabited islands will amaze you.

Geoff caught his first fish within two minutes of trolling the reef break just outside Mangalonga (or Mana) Island using deep lure at about 4 knots.

There is such a vast number of fish in dense pockets of reefs scattered throughout the 1000 islands in the Solomons. Any fishing trip is sure to delight.

There are a number of ideal fishing spots that also enable you to take a dip and snorkel should you need to escape the warm sun.
